Using many different technologies such as semantic markup (OpenGraphProtocol and Schema.org) or social 'buttons' (Facebook Like and Google +1), every Web page can now be part of a larger ecosystems made up of millions of users, blurring the borders between the Social and the more traditional Web. Authorisation technologies have enabled a myriad of smaller applications and web sites to access user activities such as tweets, shares and likes giving the impression of content personalization, but this is an artifice: delivering really personalized content to users requires the extraction of the implicit knowledge contained in their activities, which is non-trivial and requires scalable knowledge extraction and representation algorithms.
